INTRODUCTION
wealth promises of the Indies. And though few seek to know the origin of the songs that please them, the telling of the tale always adds to their attraction. Of course there are many ballads that have lived through all the ages, many more that have yet to be handed to pos-terity, that have no tangible history at all, that are simply the glorious outcome of the poet's fancy and the composer's art, but there are also many that were born of pain, perhaps misery, of patriotism, and of love, and of many of these I have endeavoured to tell.
